There’s no denying it. WIRED readers love stories of the pomaceous variety. News about Apple or Apple products accounted for half a dozen of our 17 most-read Gear stories of the year, and for good reason: this year, the company celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the iPhone, the personal product that inarguably changed the world. Apple marked the occasion by releasing the iPhone X, a device decked out with new features like facial recognition, a bezel-less screen, and, to be blunt about it, talking poop.

The company’s influence webs out so far it could also be felt in at least another four stories, including one about the Essential, a phone we billed as “the Anti-iPhone.”

But while it was a year of hellos—to the iPhone X and the Essential—2017 also saw its share of goodbyes—to Flash, to Google’s blob emoji, to the iPod, and, again, thanks to Apple, to wired headphones.
